About The Project

About The Project

EcuaDiaspora is an independent, digital, multimedia  project focused on covering the 2021 Ecuadorian presidential elections for the English-speaking Ecuadorian diaspora in the United States and beyond.

Through explainers, on-the-ground reporting, interviews and live conversations, we aimed to provide a solid understanding of Ecuadorian politics in order for the diaspora to understand and engage in the political and democratic process in Ecuador.

Work

OUR WORK

Explainers

Through Instagram explainers, we broke down key issues on Ecuadorian politics, particularly the proposals of candidates, and the surrounding issues and interests we previously discussed with our audience.

Reels - stories

We provided weekly updates on how the events were unfolding during the electoral process through Instagram Stories and Reels.

Interviews

We reached out to both candidates, and received an invitation from candidate Andres Arauz to have an in-person dialogue with Gabriela.

Unfortunately, we did not receive an answer from candidate Guillermo Lasso.

We will keep trying to contact the now president of Ecuador.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

On-the-ground reporting

OUR AUDIENCE

Audience

In order to learn more about our audience and their interests, we conducted a survey with 87 people responding. The questions included demographic information and questions about their interests and information needs. The responses helped us to have a closer connection with our audience and to identify the key topics for our content.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

Achievements

In three and a half months, without any financing and full indepence, we have achieved:

  • Identifying the needs of a niche that had not been given attention in the past

  • Created and grew a community of Ecuadorians and Ecuadorian-Americans interested in knowing more about their country of origin, politics, and current situation

  • Interviewed the second-place candidate for the presidency and raise awareness about the needs of the diaspora

  • Featured in groups like Latinas in Journalism

WHAT'S NEXT?

We plan to continue creating content, informing and inspiring the Ecuadorian diaspora. in the United States & beyond. However, we are looking for opportunities to finance our project. We are actively seeking for ideas for funding, fellowships or any kind of entrepreneurship opportunity.

Feel free to leave us any feedback, comment or suggestion!

Muchas Gracias.
